  • Read, write and manipulate your own large datasets with ease using Python.

  • Create high quality graphs and figures for your publications/thesis.

  • Build tools to automate your data analysis and to save you precious time.

  • Scrape data from the web.

Course Outline:

    1. Install and Setup: Installing Python. What is an IDE? How do I run a Python script? Python Fundamentals. Jupyter notebooks.

    2. Handling Data: Reading data. Writing Data. Dealing with multiple files. Introduction to Pandas.

    3. Visualisation: Introduction to Matplotlib. Scatterplots, boxplots and histograms. Subplots, insets and trendlines. Creading paper and thesis quality figures.

    4. Advanced Pandas: Filtering and formatting. Merging and concatenating. Getting data from the web.

    5. Putting it all together: Life expectancy Vs. GDP (WHO example). Doing cool stuff with YOUR data.

    6. Pro Tools for Research: Git and GitHub. Plotly (interactive graphs). PyCharm. Python for Latex.

About the Teacher:

Dr. Rob Treharne is a Lecturer in the School of Life Sciences, University of Liverpool. He has a Masters degree in physics from the University of Warwick and a PhD in photovoltaics from the University of Durham. Rob has introduced thousands of undergraduate and postgraduate students to coding via his grass roots, community led coding initiative HiPy. He is an expert at online teaching and specialises in creating events that are dynamic, engaging and highly valued by learners. In 2019 he was awarded a Learning & Teaching fellowship for the delivery of his HiPy coding workshops at the University of Liverpool.
