Description

About the Course

The QELCA© programme is an innovation in end of life care education. Designed by St Christopher’s Hospice and evaluated by Kings College London the programme is now delivered locally by Saint Michael’s Hospice, Harrogate.

The QELCA© programme aims to increase knowledge of the principles and practice of palliative/end of life care for health and social care practitioners working in a variety of different settings.

QELCA© involves a 5 day course attended at Saint Michael’s. Training is delivered to small groups of up to 4 at the most. Each participant will then be expected to attend 6 monthly action learning sets thereafter to facilitate the process of embedding learning and change into practice.

What will I learn

At the end of the programme participants will be able to:

  • Empathise effectively with the experience of the dying patient and their family
  • Understand the principles of implementing a palliative approach when undertaking nursing assessment and management in the relevant setting
  • Understand the implications of current national and local policy on delivery of end of life care
  • Undertake a holistic nursing assessment focusing on choice and care needs at end of life
  • Co-ordinate and ensure adequate end of life care for the patient and family within a non-specialist setting, liaising with other professionals or agencies as necessary
  • Facilitate discharge or effective care in the patient’s preferred place of care and
  • Formulate an action plan to improve, develop and sustain good quality end of life care within their specific care setting

Who is it for?

Managers/Clinicians who are working at a level of seniority which allows them to affect change in their organisation and have the support of relevant managers.

What will the course look like?

The five day course at Saint Michael’s Hospice combines teaching, observation of clinical practice and reflective debriefing. It is followed by six months of Facilitated Action Learning sets (one per month). This programme includes teaching sessions delivered by experienced palliative care experts on Monday/Wednesday/Friday with clinical placements on Tuesday and Thursday. Delegates are invited to create their own training programme on the Wednesday by choosing the sessions that will be most beneficial to them back in their own area of practice. Clinical placement may be on the hospice inpatient unit, day therapy unit and/or visiting patients at home with the specialist teams.

Participants will receive a certificate of completion following the action learning sets.
