The Comparative and International Dispute Resolution specialism of Queen Mary, University of London invites you to a lecture on Oral Advocacy: do's and dont's? delivered by Dr. Johannes Koepp and Mr. Miguel de Almada, and moderated by Ms. Elizabeth Chan.
With a presentation followed by questions and answers, the seminar will focus on different aspects of oral advocacy in international arbitration, its importance and best practices. Be prepared to discuss do's and don'ts in opening statements, cross examinations, examination of witnesses and final statements. Both speakers are also experts in litigation, therefore, litigation oral practices will be addressed as means of confrontation to the international arbitration ones. The speakers will share some of their most captivating and rather instructive experiences in the international arbitration and litigation arenas.
Dr. Johannes Koepp practice focuses on international arbitration, both commercial and investor-state. He has represented clients before most major arbitral institutions, as well as in ad hoc proceedings. He is particularly experienced in multijurisdictional disputes arising out of energy, joint ventures, telecommunications and financial services. Dr. Koepp also advises on public international law issues and the litigation of international disputes in state courts. He holds First State Exam, University of Hamburg, Germany 1998; LL.M., European law and international economic law, Universities of Geneva and Lausanne, Switzerland 1999; Doctor Juris, University of Hamburg, Germany 2001; and second State Exam, Higher Regional Court of Hamburg 2002.
Mr. Miguel de Almada has extensive experience in domestic and international commercial arbitration as counsel and arbitrator, and in civil and commercial litigation. He is a partner and head of a dispute resolution practice group at Morais Leitão, Galvão Teles, Soares da Silva & Associados in Lisbon. He holds a law degree from University of Lisbon, 1998; postgraduate Studies in Civil and Criminal Law and Civil and Criminal Procedure Law (Portuguese Catholic University, 2003); postgraduateStudies in Arbitration (Nova University of Lisbon, 2009).
Ms. Elizabeth Chan specialises in international arbitration, public international law, and business and human rights. She is an Associate at Three Crowns, LLP and holds a B.A. (majoring in French and Political Studies) and a Law Degree from the University of Auckland and an LL.M. from Yale University Law School.
