Description

Interviewing about sensitive topics: the role of ethics, empathy, compassion and vulnerability

Dr Sam Wright, Research Associate, Manchester Metropolitan University

Abstract:

This will be an interactive workshop, with open discussion of undertaking sensitive qualitative research, the challenges that poses and how they might be overcome.

We’ll be addressing how ethical and moral considerations can inform qualitative interviewing especially when conducted on sensitive topics or with people who have specific vulnerabilities.

The session aims to be suitable for all: new and experienced social researchers, health and social care practitioners who have ‘difficult’ conversations as part of their work, and hopefully people who have experience of being on the receiving end of questions about sensitive topics!

Bio:

Dr Sam Wright has been researching substance use, social exclusion and evaluating criminal justice/social interventions since 1995. Her work has included interviewing about experiences of domestic violence, drug use and treatment seeking; drug using parents; offending and experiences of the criminal justice system; young people at risk of substance use and offending; mental health difficulties among people in prison; having a family member in prison and young people leaving custody.

Sam is currently a Research Associate, working with Professor Sarah Galvani and a multi-disciplinary team at MMU researching end of life care for people with alcohol and other drug problems.

In her spare time, Sam is a trustee for a mental health drop-in service and has previously worked in a voluntary capacity for Women’s Aid and her local Hospice.
