Description

Anonymity Versus Participant's 'voice'

Krystina Crolla-Barker, PhD student, Manchester Metropolitan University

Abstract:

In a time in which people are constantly posting videos, writing blogs and telling the world via social media their views on both the day-to-day life issues and world views, should there be a shift in the assumption that anonymity is the preferred choice for research participants?

My research focuses on young people who are dying of cancer, and as we have seen in the media from TV programmes, YouTube videos and charitable campaigns, some young people want their voice heard. They feel empowered to share their journey and experiences with the world without a thought perhaps of remaining anonymous.

I would like to gather thoughts of other clinicians, researchers and people with a general interest to think through some of the wider issues that arise if a participant makes a choice to have their name published in the research rather than a pseudonym. I am currently problem solving issues relating specifically to protecting the rights of the people that are named within the interview. For example the individual being interviewed may wish to have their real name included in the research (and subsequent publications); however, within the interview they may refer to individuals who would be easily identified and have not necessarily provided consent for their identity to be within the research.
