Course outline

Trainees should be in roles that handle audio and video content within the production workflow to broadcast quality, with specific emphasis on delivering completed programmes. Examples include, QC operator, online editor, edit assistant, MCR operator, technical manager. Priority will be given to those working in the HETV sector, but the course is equally applicable to those working in children’s drama and the broader screenindustries.

This 2-day course will cover:

  • The technical standards and customer specifications used for UK and international delivery of TV programmes to broadcast and online distribution platforms (especially DPPAS-11)
  • International deliverables to aid localisation, such as M&E tracks, STEMS and textlessbackgrounds
  • The correct environment for quality control andassessment
  • The EBU model for the classification of quality issues and the ITU 5-point quality assessmentscale
  • The correct terminology for the description of sub-optimal qualityissues
  • The regulations and issues regarding flashing images and stimuli causing photo sensitiveepilepsy
  • The specifications for on-screen text and graphics such as safeareas
  • The importance of intelligibility of dialogue and how this is impacted by a complex range of factors, especially age-related hearingloss
  • The checking of line-up, clocks, audio track layout, timecodes, part breaks, bumpers andcredits
  • The checking of mandatory and optionalmetadata
  • The checking of filecompliance
  • The use of audio and video test and monitoring equipment to measure signal parameters such as video levels, gamut, blanking, loudness and true peak audiolevel
  • Interpretation of the results of reports from automated audio and video test equipment including PSE tests
  • Taking an objective and pragmatic view of quality control and deciding what is acceptable and what is not depending on the context of the material and its intended use. Reviewing falsepositives.
  • Writing accurate and concise Quality Assessment Reports with clear indications of mandatory failures and advisorywarnings
  • The future - QC implications of IMFdelivery

There will be practical sessions with example broadcast quality material containing faults to be detected and classified. Industry standard broadcast quality monitoring, test and measurement equipment will be available.
