Overview: Quantifying Critical Quality Goals and Strategic Qualities

This is a practical workshop. We will work in small teams (2-3) and exercise step by step in methods for quantifying the project/product critical quality objectives. We will learn by doing, learn a process for quantifying the various quality dimensions for all strategies/designs/architectures.

Description

  • Day 1: How to quantify the many critical quality aspects of any system or product.
  • Day 2: How to quantify and estimate  the multiple critical qualities (and costs) expected from potential deployment of any suggested strategy/design/architecture

Content

Day 1

  • Pick a project; your own current one if you like. Or join a team.
  • Stakeholder analysis: their needs and values
  • Converting value into quantified quality requirements. Scale, Goal
  • Other advanced specifications: Constraints, Background

Day 2

  • Brainstorming solutions (strategies/designs/architecture)
  • Decomposing large strategies into smaller deliverables
  • Estimating the expected effects of a strategy on any quality requirement
  • Systematic methods for dealing with uncertainty of strategy effects
  • How to prioritise the most cost effective strategies
  • The Impact Estimation Table: summarizing the big picture: all requirements and all strategies.
  • We expect to be able to use the new tool app.needsandmeans.com

The Result of Course Participation

  • Participants could have learned powerful practical tools for planning their  projects, with respect to qualities and costs
  • Participants should have a basis for further studies, and free access to  considerable literature to follow up with.

Limitations:

The course will have sharp focus on learning by doing, on learning a practical planning language for system qualities (aka values, benefits) and costs.

This will not give space for doing complete planning (all qualities for one system); but the participant should be able to complete things after the course.

It will also not have all the time would like to have to present the full scope of the methods, or even the complete rationale of the methods that we do exercise with. But, the participant will be equipped with considerable literature (books and many papers and slides) to enable them to study more afterwards.
