PEAT Outcome - relevant legal knowledge

OBJECTIVES

This seminar aims to provide delegates with an understanding of the underlying principles of quantification of damages as well as knowledge of commonplace heads of claims. The seminar will also go on to discuss more complex issues such as future loss heads of claim, and other factors affecting damages as well as the potential effect of future legislation.

PARTICIPANTS

This seminar will be of interest to solicitors and trainee solicitors who work in the area of personal injury and insurance law.

SPEAKER

Frank Hughes, Partner at BLM. Frank has experience in conducting insurer-related litigation across a wide arena, including to the Supreme Court and specialises in complex loss and emerging risks, with a significant background in disease litigation. Frank has been an accredited specialist in Personal Injuries for many years and acts as an expert witness in solicitors’ negligence. Frank is also a member of the Regulatory Committee of the Law Society of Scotland and a former Chair of the Forum of Insurance Lawyers in Scotland.

John Thomson, Advocate. John has been an active court practitioner for over three decades. For the last twenty years he has specialised exclusively in personal injury work. He was worked on every sort of PI case, from employers’ liability to low speed impacts. He is recognised for his work in fraud, civil juries and Appeal work. In the first ASPIC Jury case he obtained a finding of 96.5% contributory negligence. He believes that the most important case is the one you are working on; that is the only one which matters to the client. His outside interests include Investing.
