Quartet for the End of Time
Overview
Olivier Messian’s visceral Quatuor pour la fin du temps (Quartet for the End of Time) was written in a German prisoner-of-war camp in 1941. The first performance was given on found, borrowed and broken instruments for an audience of prisoners, but the piece has since become one of the most celebrated works of the 20th century.
Performed by Ensemble Mi (Anthony Friend, clarinet; Agata Daraškaitė, violin; Peteris Sokolovskis, cello; James Cheung, piano), Quatuor pour la fin du temps will be followed by an improvised reflection by Jon Hopkins, Leo Abrahams, and Maddie Ashman.
