Did you know that fungi can have more sexes than you can imagine, that slugs have both female and male reproductive organs, and that many birds pair up into same-sex couples?
Join the Linnean Society — birthplace of the theory of evolution — for this special guided tour exploring the diversity of nature and its interpretation by scientists throughout history.
We’ll explore natural specimens from the historic collection that challenge traditional views of nature, think about the biases we have when looking at nature, and discuss the issues Queer scientists still face today. We’ll then have a short quiz and relax with a drink in our stunning library.
This is an in-person event aimed at those interested in seeing nature from a new perspective. The event will last two hours. Limited to 25 spots.
Alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks will be sold at this event. Please bring ID with you. Please note that photos will be taken at this event. If you do not wish to be featured, let a staff member know at the event.
This evening will be run by former Education Officer of the Linnean Society, Dani Crowley, who is currently a PhD student with Bangor University, the Zoological Society of London and Natural Resources Wales.
Dani is studying the cultural importance of sharks to communities in North Wales and how this and their ecological benefits will be impacted by climate change. Read more about the project here.
Ages 16+ ONLY
Content warnings | This tour will discuss themes of discrimination and sexual reproduction and the anatomy of genitalia in animals.
