Pédale Rurale (Rural F*ggot) by Antoine Vazquez (2025) follows the life of Benoit in Dordogne, France. He has built a paradise and shelter for himself in his house and beautiful garden. From there he negotiates the conflicts of Dordogne rurality with his identity. One day him and other local queers decide to organise the first Perigord Vert Rural Pride. It’s time to come out of the woods, to take the space to celebrate, heal, and open a way.
We are so proud to bring you this very special film and question once more our vision of rurality and queerness. I (Jules) grew up an hour away from where this documentary is set and it was the first time I saw people like me, in familiar locations, on film. This film happens when we are making our own film [ Rural Queers: A Scottish (They)story ] about rural queerness and dismantling a commonplace assumption that rural equals backwards and the impossibility to stay/exist in the countryside as queer people. Pédale Rurale shows the complexities and hardships, as well as profound joys of being rural and queer, and perhaps like Benoit says in the film existing beyond labels and words.
This film will mark our 3rd anniversary and a rural turn for QFN, with two of its founding members now living in a small village. Come celebrate three years of films and discussions with a very special screening at the ESHC.
The film will be followed by an informal discussion. Tickets are pay what you can and free.
