Queer Geology - a speculative workshop with AJ Stockwell
This workshop is led by artist AJ Stockwell as part of the Freelands Fellowship exchange between the University of Dundee & Falmouth University.
Together we will explore how to deepen our connection to geologic bodies, using a series of movement and visualisation exercises. These exercises aim to reposition our bodies in relation to the rocks that surround us, blurring the boundaries between our mineralogical bodies.
AJ Stockwell is a queer, neurodivergent artist based between the Western Isles and the central belt in Scotland. 'Queer Geology' is part of their current research which examines their lived relationship with specific geologic bodies through the lens of queer ecology* and neurodiverse experience of place.
This workshop is aimed at anyone with a curiosity or interest in geology, considering this from a queer perspective. No previous experience is necessary but you are welcome to bring a rock with you that you have developed a connection with.
*queer ecology applies queer theory to ecology, challenging dominant hetronormative and cisnormative perspectives that define nature and our relationship with it.
Further information on what to expect and directions to the host venue will be sent out to attendees in advance.
Note on venue:
Pendennis Castle is a historic site at the edge of Falmouth, overlooking the town and out to the sea. Here you can witness how stone and geologic features have been used to service human progress.
