Queer(ing) Religion Conference

queer/disrupt, in collaboration with the Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies and the House of Rainbow come together to host a two day conference, exploring the intersections between queer theory and religious communities and texts.

The Queer(ing) Religion conference aims to address, not only how to reconcile queerness and religion, but to fill in the gaps and address the current lack of research on religion and queerness. Queer studies have tended towards secularity, thereby ignoring religion as a crucial factor in shaping queer experiences. In doing so, the experiences of those who desire/struggle to integrate religion and queerness, are often deemed irrelevant. Instead, this conference aspires to open up and begin a critical re-evaluation of the underlying assumptions that inform and uphold the inflexible and binary attitude, queer studies have towards religion.

In doing so, we aim to offer a platform to foster and strengthen transnational connections between and within marginalised communities, and to envision alternative patterns of solidarity.

We are proud to announce as our two keynote speakers Reverend Jide Macaulay, the founding Pastor and CEO of House Of Rainbow, and Dr. Samar Habib, renowned gender and sexuality scholar and the author of numerous works on Islam and non-normative sexuality.

Queer(ing) Religion will be an online event which is spread over two days, featuring a variety of exciting presentations and discussions. Our panelists expertise hails from diverse backgrounds; from academia to actiivism as well as providing a wide array of geographical and cultural expertise.
