About this event

Queering The Countryside

A Poetry Workshop with James McDermott

Onions, potatoes and strawberries reproduce asexually. There are 300,000 genders of fungi. 130 species of bird have same-sex pairings. Streams, like all bodies of water, constantly change form. In other words, the countryside is queer! In this interactive Zoom poetry writing workshop, through a series of writing exercises and discussions of selected poems, James McDermott invites you to re-see the countryside through a queer lens, and generate first drafts of poems exploring the queerness of nature.

The workshop will be led by James McDermott. James’s spoken word collection ‘Manatomy’ is published by Burning Eye Books and was recently longlisted for 2021’s Polari First Book Prize. James’s forthcoming pamphlets include ‘Erased’ (Polari Press) and ‘Nudes’ (Red Ceilings Press). With support from the Arts Council and mentoring from Richard Scott, James is currently writing a new page poetry collection exploring the nature of queerness and the queerness of nature. James’s poem ‘Cottage’ was published in Issue 1 of Spelt.
