QUENTIN BLAKE: Loose Lines in Pen & Ink - Robins, Snow and Scarves

RECORDING ONLY - Available to watch instantly after booking until the 28th of December 2025.

Taught by Frances Stanfield

"I do a freewheeling sort of drawing that looks as though it is done on the spur of the moment. However even a single drawing needs a certain amount of preparation and planning." - Quentin Blake

In this session we will look closely at how Blake captures movement with scratchy lines and with such simplicity and confidence.

We will look at:

  • how Blake builds rhythm through fast, searching strokes
  • how to suggest motion with tilted forms and directional marks
  • how to balance ink flow, pressure, and speed
  • how scratchy, irregular lines create life and humour on the page

This festive edition uses winter subjects as a springboard, giving you the chance to experiment with energy, looseness, and visual play. Flying wrapping paper, wonky trees, bundled-up characters in motion, and robins with oversized personalities...

You will work through a sequence of short mark-making studies before Frances takes you through some longer exercises including how to add colour to your ink drawings.

Perfect for all levels, especially anyone wanting to loosen their line, explore pen and ink with confidence, and develop a more instinctive drawing practice.

ARE YOU TRYING TO BOOK VIA THE EVENTBRITE PHONE APP?!

We have been in touch with Eventbrite, and they have informed us that currently you cannot book tickets to online events in their app. It's very frustrating and we have been assured they are working on a solution. In the meantime, we recommend that you book tickets to our events outside of the iOS app - either via a web browser or a desktop. If you book our classes regularly we recommend deleting the eventbrite App.
