Event description

Description

The configuration, production, dissemination and normalisation of ways of knowing and being, have too often, been constructed in a way that disadvantages and excludes Southern perspectives. This has led to the toxic acceptance of the “logic of the system” where dominant, Northern perspectives, are taken as an unquestionable given. This one-day conference, as part of the mbokafestival.com, and Gambia Development School January 2018, will encourage participants to question the “logic of the system” and generate disruptive, counter orthodoxy perspectives, to mainstream development narratives. This is from across all disciplines including history, literature, economics, and the sciences. The conference will bring together 80 scholars, academics, policy makers, practitioners and students, to critically examine narratives and counter-narratives to development, with the following objectives:

Objectives

  1. Amplify missing Southern voices in dominant mainstream narratives.
  2. Provide a space to deconstruct and decolonise configurations, dissemination and normalisation of ways of knowing and being, especially in relation to the notion of development.
  3. Explore Southern perspectives through a range of disciplinary lenses towards a greater understanding of the natural and social sciences, associated with de-colonial, post-colonial, counter narratives.
