Create your own quilt

About this event

Join us to begin the process of designing and making your own quilt!

During this workshop you can choose to begin making your quilt from a pattern provided, or you may choose to 'freequilt' and tune into your inner creative instincts!

The workshop will cater for all sewing levels and you will come away with the beginnings of a quilt. You need never have quilted before! You will learn how to measure and assemble fabric pieces, and master how to merge colour, texture and pattern. Depending on your level and pace, you'll begin a quilt top for a cushion cover, lap/baby quilt or you can use the work as the start of a bigger quilt to finish at home. We will look at the types of wadding/batting you can use for your quilt (the filling inside the quilt sandwich if you like), how to layer the quilt up and finally, we will touch on how to finish your quilt, using hand-quilting methods, basting and binding.

You will leave with 3-4 block pieces, but more importantly you'll leave the class full of inspiration and with a new foundation for bringing your own unique style to your quilts!

We provide:

Rotary blade cutters

Clear grided ruler in metric sizes (if you prefer to measure in inches please bring your own ruler)

Cutting mats, pins, measuring tape, thread etc. If you feel more comfortable using your own equipment that's fine, bring it along.

Extra linens to buy for your quilt. These will be at a discounted rate of 20% during the class and for a week after.

Time: 7 hours working time

What you need to bring:

Your sewing machine if you have one. If not, please get in contact before the class and we will aim to supply one for you.

Fabric: you will require a selection of light to medium weight linens or cottons in contrasting colours or patterns. They do not have to be specific quilting fabrics and in fact it is preferable that they are not! Just fabrics that you like. They can be new fabrics or cloth which is personal to you, whether they are precious clothes you've loved, clothes from children/grandchildren or even a wedding dress! About a total of about 2m of your own fabrics should be sufficient. Using your own fabrics within your quilt can often 'connect' you to what is often your first quilt. Please ensure your fabrics have been prewashed.

Please do not bring fabrics which contain lycra or silks as these respond differently to stitching and require their own involved preparations, which we can discuss during the workshop.

It will be helpful to record your making process on your phone or camera and a notebook is also handy.

My aim is simple - that you go away energised and enthused to use your new-found knowledge in a creative way! Unleash the inner creative in you or pick up your sewing needle again.

This will be a small class so booking early is recommended.
