Quip Shed Comedy brings audiences the best established and emerging comedy acts on the UK circuit.

About this event

Quip Shed Comedy is excited to continue to host its monthly comedy gig at The Old Cranleighan Club in Thames Ditton on the last Friday of every month.

For September, we have an incredible line-up, featuring Ian Smith, Russell Hicks, Mickey Overman, host Jamie Allerton, and our amazing headliner Rhys James!

Our opener, Ian Smith, is an award-winning comedian, actor and writer.

Since starting at a young age, Ian has developed a reputation as an exciting, creative comic. Mixing conversational, energetic storytelling and observations with unique set pieces and an exceptional skill for improvisation – Ian is a regular at the biggest comedy clubs in the UK.

Ian has appeared on BBC Three at the Fringe, BBC3 panel show Sweat the Small Stuff and Channel 5 series The Funny Thing About… He was also one third of popular Dave podcast, The Magic Sponge, alongside Rob Beckett, which has previously topped the iTunes comedy charts.

Ian’s Edinburgh Fringe shows have received critical acclaim, award-nominations and runs at Soho Theatre. His fourth solo show, Snowflake, was a big success, winning an Amused Moose Comedy Award and a ThreeWeeks Editors’ Award. He was then invited to perform the show at New Zealand Comedy Festival. In 2018, Ian took his fifth solo show, Craft, to the Edinburgh Fringe – receiving further acclaim, touring the show in Dubai, returning to New Zealand and transferring to Soho Theatre.

2019 saw Ian return to New Zealand Comedy Festival and perform on the New Zealand Comedy Gala (TVNZ). Over the past few years Ian has cemented regular writing work on The News Quiz, The Now Show and Newsjack (BBC Radio 4), written two of his own web series’ (Hope You Come Up Here and 100 Reasons to Hate…) and written for various comedians (including for Mock the Week).

Russell Hicks is one of the most exciting new comic talents coming out of the USA, having already appeared on numerous one-to-watch line-ups and gaining a seriously impressive list of credits.

Now based in London, Russell has become known for his risk taking and thrillingly quick wit – anarchic, unbridled and unfiltered. His abstract, unapologetic views on life in the UK provide fresh perspective and insight into the mind of this young comic powerhouse. His infectiously rebellious personality immediately gets audiences on side and he exudes magnetic charm from the moment he steps onstage.

In the US, Russell has already appeared on several shows including Direct TV’s What’s News? and in the UK, he presents Yahoo’s Beat The Street and Room of Doom. He also hosts cult podcast Off The Grid which invites comedians to talk about what their life would be like without social media.

Hicks has now established himself as a major player on the UK comedy circuit, alongside his Stateside work with legendary venues The Comedy Store and The Laugh Factory in Hollywood.

Micky Overman is one of the most promising and exciting acts to hit the circuit in years.

A bedrock of surgically sharp writing combined with a cool and confident delivery make her an exceptional comedian. Her material moves quickly from devastating honesty, to brutal whimsy, to on-point social observations. She already has the aura of a successful comic well beyond her years.

Our headliner, Rhys James, began performing in 2009 in student competitions such as Comedy Central’s Funniest Student in 2010 and Chortle’s Student Comedy Award. He made his Edinburgh debut as a performer for The Pleasance Comedy Reserve in 2010, and again in 2012 as a performer in AAA- Stand Up. He was also a finalist in the Laughing Boy New Act Competition and placed 3rd in 'Comedy Central's Funniest Student'.

He has appeared on Live At The Apollo, Mock the Week, Russell Howard's Stand Up Central, Roast Battle, @elevenish, Virtually Famous and Sweat the Small Stuff.

He has had two BBC Radio 4 series and performed six solo shows at the Edinburgh Festival to sell-out crowds and critical acclaim, with his show, ‘Snitch’, being one of the best reviewed comedy shows at the festival.

He is also known for his prolific Twitter feed which has been recommended in The Telegraph, The Sun, Huffington Post, The Poke and The Gentleman’s Journal, among others.
