Event description

Quiz in the North is coming to the Great Border City! This event is a fun day of quizzing, suitable for those of all ages and abilities. Compete against your friends, your family - and some of the top quizzers in the UK! There's prizes up for grabs, including trophies, local foodstuffs, and the traditional Quiz in the North grand prize - a flat cap like the one worn by the gentleman in the picture above.

The main event is a 180 question individual general knowledge quiz written by your host, Addy Lewis. In the afternoon, there will be two team quizzes, one written by Addy Lewis, the other by esteemed quizzer and previous Quiz In The North host Jon Stitcher.

It costs just £5 to enter, payable at the door on the day. Please confirm your attendance in advance of the event, so that enough question papers can be printed.

Provisional Schedule

11.00: Registration

11.30: Individual written quiz (approx. 180 questions)

13:00: Marking of individual quiz

13:30: Lunch (available at the venue or nearby)

14:30: Team written quiz - written by Jon Stitcher and Addy Lewis

17:00: Results and prize giving

17:30: Close

18:00 onwards: Optional meal at a local venue for those wishing to stay on afterwards. This does not form part of the main event and will be booked separately.

The event will take place in the Milton Hilltop Hotel's function room. Disabled access is available. If any attendees have additional requirements, such as large print, braille, etc, please let me know as soon as possible. All quizzes will be written. Pens will be available, but please provide your own if possible, along with scrap paper if desired.

Teams for the afternoon quiz will be assigned based on performance in the individual quiz, therefore these do not need to be formed beforehand.

Travel Information

The Milton Hilltop Hotel is 1 mile away from Carlisle train station - approximately 20 minutes walk. Simply exit the station via the main entrance, turn right onto Botchergate, and keep walking until you see the hotel at the top of a hill on your right hand side. When the road splits, keep going straight forward on the left hand side; Asda should be on your right. A retail complex is directly across on the left hand side of the main road, and a car wash directly below the hotel.

Attendees from London - the 7.30am train from London Euston gets in at approximately 10.45, and return trains are at 18.10 and 18.50, approximately. The event will be timed to enable attendees to make these trains.

Parking at the hotel and in the area is ample. From the north, at junction 43 of the M6, take a left on to Eastern Way, a right onto London Road, and the hotel will be on your left. From the south, take junction 42 of the M6 and simply follow the road until you see the hotel on your left.

Busses and taxis are also available.

The Milton Hilltop Hotel is very reasonable! I highly recommend staying at the venue itself on the Friday and/or Saturday if attending this event and making a weekend of it. The venue can be contacted on 01228 810899. Other city centre hotels are also within easy access, however.

What if I want to make a weekend of this?

It's my intention to be in Carlisle on the Friday night, Saturday night and potentially Sunday, and if there is interest in social events, I will try and organise something. These will not formally be a part of the QITN and are wholly optional, but are a great way to meet fellow quizzers! After the event itself, myself and anyone else who is interested will go for a curry, which will be pre-booked nearer the time. If you are interested in this, please let me know.

Event Sponsor

I'm delighted to say that QITN #21 is sponsored by the podcast Trivial Warfare! This is an American quizzing podcast that features hosts and contestants from all around the world, competing against each other each week in teams of 1-3. Combining interesting questions and great discussion about the subject matter with friendly competition and great people, it's a really fun show that has taught me a lot and made me many friends. You can listen to the show on any good podcast app, or on their website: You can also meet the hosts and fans of the show through the Facebook group, the Trivial Warfare Army, which I highly recommend doing!

Chosen Charity

Quiz in the North is a not-for-profit event, and it's my intention to donate any profits made from the day to Mind, a mental health charity that works across the UK in a field that badly needs more support. I'm delighted to have the opportunity to support such a worthy cause, and a donation bucket will be available on the day for anyone who wishes to do likewise.

Why should I come along?

You should come to this event because it's a great opportunity to meet and quiz with fantastic people in a beautiful city. It's a competition, but an informal one, and we're a friendly group who love to meet new people. It's fun for those of all abilities and interests, from those who have never quizzed before right up to professionals.

If you have any questions, please do get in touch with me at mradamelewis(at)gmail(dot)com. Or you can check out the Quiz in the North Facebook Group here!
