Race, racism and policing in Scotland: Issues, Challenges and Directions for Research

This half-day workshop is aimed at the academic community to take stock and discuss the state and future of research in this area. It recognises the need for robust, critical interrogation of race, racism and policing in Scotland, a country with particular patterns of racialisation and history of coloniality, as well as organisation and practices of policing.

Short interventions by academic experts will stimulate an interactive discussion among participants to: set the scene for understanding race and racism in Scotland; identify key challenges to researching race and policing critically; reflect on meanings of institutional racism in historic and contemporary contexts; and consider decolonial implications and demands of doing work on these topics. Outcomes of the workshop could include building a research network on race and policing, identifying research gaps and priorities, and connecting to or facilitating a wider, anti-discrimination research conversation that considers further issues such as misogyny, ableism, class and more.
