Event description

Description

Join us for the launch of the Race Beat, a new journalism network for people of colour in the UK, set up because we need to do more to change the social make-up our media and support each other in the process.

We’ll discuss everything from historic activism by black, Asian and other ethnic minority journalists in the UK to racist reporting on Muslim communities. We look at what’s missing from reporting on race in Britain and who is missing from newsdesks and editorial decision-making teams.

The conversation will be led by broadcaster and columnist Gary Younge and political journalist Maya Goodfellow.

Come down for food and drink from 7.30pm. Talk begins at 8pm.

About the Race Beat

The Race Beat is independent of any media organisation – it is a network led by and for people of colour.

We want to create space for writers of colour to come together and begin to:

  • collaborate on race related stories and reporting projects on a wide range of subjects,
  • provide accessible spaces for regular discussion on; craft, racism, class, skills sharing, solutions,
  • build partnerships with small organisations fighting for better representation and supporting writers of colour,
  • strategise on ways to properly fund more quality journalism (comment, criticism, investigations) and race reporting by writers of colour.

Hear more about our plans and how to get involved on the night.

We are done with asking to be given space in the UK media – we are going to take it. We hope you will join us.
