Description

Blackwell's is delighted to welcome to the bookshop Rachel Reeves, who will be discussing her book 'Alice in Westminster: The Political Life of Alice Bacon', exploring the life of one of the twentieth-century's most remarkable female politicians. Starting her career by being elected as the Labour MP for Leeds North East in 1945, Alice Bacon's political career spanned some of the most momentous decades in Britain's postwar history, with her being an integral part in some of the most significant social, educational and political changes which the country has ever witnessed. 'Alice in Westminster' narrates one woman's extraordinary progression from the coalfields to the Commons.

Rachel Reeves has acted as Labour MP for Leeds West since 2010, when she became the second female MP elected in Leeds after Alice Bacon's election in 1945. In Parliament, Rachel has served as the Shadow Minister for (Work and Pensions Oct 2010-Oct 2011), Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury (Oct 2011-Oct 2013), Shadow Secretary of the State for Work and Pensions (Oct 2013-Sep 2015) and Treasury Committee member (Oct 2015-May2017). Currently, Rachel is Chair of the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Select Committee and Co-Chair of the Jo Cox Commission on Loneliness.
