We define racial justice as the systemic redistribution of power, opportunities, and access for Black and minoritized communities. By economic empowerment, we mean having access to income and wealth that enables communities to be in control of their own circumstances. The size of the fund is £4million, over two years, However, it should be noted that there is a long-term strategic commitment by The Trust to addressing the issues of racial justice.

Background   

There is compelling evidence about the links between race, racism and poverty; Black, Asian and minority ethnic households are twice as likely to be living in poverty as their white counterparts1 This is also mirrored in London Poverty Profile2.  The data on employment, health, housing, criminal justice, wealth, and education outcomes persistently show significant disparities based on race. And whilst there has been progress on some of these outcomes over the past few decades for some ethnic groups, high levels of poverty and inequality continue to prevail.    

This fund will seek to support Black and minoritised innovators (by this, we mean organisations not individuals (or innovative organisations whose work has the potential to increase incomes and wealth in local communities.  

This funding opportunity was influenced by the voices of many key stakeholders we have talked to, including several organisations working at the intersection of racial justice, together with our own experience of funding work on these issues over many years.
