Description

Radical Anthropology

Thu 7 September | 11:15 | Bargehouse

This workshop discusses a turn in anthropological filmmaking: a creative blending of fact and fiction, ethnographic observation, archival history, literary theory and memoir. Barbara Knorpp will be in conversation with filmmakers from this year's film programme to consider the politics and aesthetics of ethnofiction in relation to current debates in ethnographic film around collaboration and self-representation. Can fictional devices enable spaces of participation and co-production which reshuffle the practice of ethnography? Is radical anthropology a tool for the self-determination of collectives and collective self-determination? What kind of anthropological knowledge can be produced through a different storytelling in these works? Participating filmmakers will share their experiences of these approaches.
