Want your charity’s board to truly reflect the people it serves?

More and more charities and not-for-profits are inviting people with lived experience to join their boards, creating richer perspectives and stronger decision-making. But alongside the opportunities, there can be challenges too.

At Arts & Homelessness International (AHI), we’re a fully co-created charity – 50% of our board and staff are, or have been, homeless. We have Co-Directors and Co-Chairs with lived experience, and the Charity Commission has recently given us permission to pay our trustees who have personal experience of homelessness.

In this Radical Governance Training, we’ll explore:

  • Why it’s important to have a board that is representative of the charity
  • Recruitment of trustees with lived experience
  • Induction and onboarding of new trustees, including support and buddying
  • Creating a safe and brave space in board meetings
  • Building boards around the needs of the individual
  • Co-creation techniques for running meetings – making sure every voice is heard, and trustees feel that they are contributing and are valued
  • Paying trustees – a detailed description of the process AHI went through with the Charity Commission to gain permission

This interactive session is open to anyone interested in the topic, with any level of experience.

Frequently asked questions

Who is this training for?

This session is for anyone interested in shifting the way governance works in charities, CICs or arts organisations. You might be: • A trustee or board member • A lived experience leader • A CEO or Co-Director exploring co-leadership • Someone developing inclusive board structures • A funder

Do I need to have experience in governance or lived experience leadership to attend?

Not at all. This session is designed to meet people where they’re at. We’ll be sharing practical tools and reflections based on our own journey, and there will be space for questions, ideas and discussion no matter your starting point.

Will this session be accessible?

We aim to make all our sessions as accessible as possible. If you have access needs (e.g. captioning, visual materials in advance, or anything else that would help you participate fully), please let us know when booking. We will do everything we can to meet your needs.

Is there a recording or follow-up material?

This is a live, interactive session and will not be recorded — but we can offer follow-up resources, key points, and further support on request. We’re happy to stay in touch with anyone who wants to go deeper after the session.

What if my organisation can’t afford the full ticket price?

We want this training to be accessible to all. If your organisation is unfunded, grassroots, or facing barriers to participation, please get in touch. We offer sliding scale pricing and will always try to accommodate your situation.
