Radical Librarians Collective Gathering 2017
Sat 15 July 2017, 12:00 – 16:00 BST
Following previous events in Bradford, London, Huddersfield and Brighton, the Radical Librarianship Collective Gathering is taking place in Glasgow this time round!
Radical Librarians Collective aims to offer a space to challenge, provoke, improve and develop the communications between like-minded radicals, to galvanise our collective solidarity against the marketisation of libraries and the removal of our agency to our working worlds and beyond.
All are welcome to this horizontalist event, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the ongoing dialogues or to offer and suggest something new and radical: we want to start discussions, organise and bring about positive changes for the library and information profession. We want something to be created from these discussions to help facilitate further discussion and mutual support.
We welcome and encourage engagement on the day, but also in finding ways to build upon the discussions. We want to ensure that we are not in isolation, and that like-minded individuals can be part of a constructive and supportive network.
The event will work as an 'unconference' style - this means that all attendees are invited to make suggestions about topics for discussion in each of the sessions. Please submit your ideas on the pitches page.
We're also looking at having a specific session as a workshop for people to learn about protecting their own and their users' privacy, facilitated by Scottish PEN (this is open to discussion on the RLC mailing list and yet to be confirmed)
A draft schedule is below:
12 - 12:30: Welcome, introduction and pitches
12:30 – 1:30: Session 1
1:30 – 2: Lunch (bring your own) and casual discussion
2 - 3: Session 2 (possibly a workshop/cryptoparty session on internet security)
3 - 4: Session 3
Help Us Out; Get Involved
We're keen to encourage anyone interested to get involved in helping out with organising, so please feel free to contact us if you'd like to get involved.
Radical Librarians Collective operates on a donations policy to allow anyone who would like to come access to the event, irrespective of their financial ability to pay for a ticket. We also encourage those that can afford to do so to contribute a donation in advance or on the day in order to cover the overheads that such events build up. If you'd like to donate to help with costs, go to the donations page on the website for details on how to do so.
The Fine Print
Everyone who subscribes to the principles of the Radical Librarians Collective is welcome and encouraged to attend. To ensure that we remain free from sponsorship and any corporate influence, the gathering is free to attend with voluntary donations welcomed to cover the associated costs.
As with all gatherings of the Radical Librarians Collective, #radlib17 will adhere to the agreed safer spaces policy which you can read here. The safety and inclusion of everyone that attends is fundamental to the day. We are also working to address specific barriers to involvement. If you have any additional suggestions to ensure that the safer spaces policy and event organisation reflects this, please do let us know.
