Event description

Description

Part of Repowering Britain, a series of events organised by the Labour Energy Forum in collaboration with Platform London, for the 2017 Labour Conference fringe.

With Marsha de Cordova MP, Councillor Matthew Brown (Cabinet Member for Social Justice, Inclusion & Policy on Preston City Council), Natasha Nkonde (GLC Story, tbc), Councillor Dan Iley-Williamson, Laia Betran (Barcelona en Comu)

The left tilt within the party has created space for a 21st century municipal socialism. Town hall politics can hand power back to communities and build social housing, instead of shutting libraries and promoting gentrification.

We can learn from democratic experiments in Barcelona and Madrid - and Labour’s own past running the GLC and elsewhere. How do we build manifestos for the Many not the Few at a local level, hand back control and democratise our city councils?

Repowering Britain is a space for bold left visions for a transformed economy, society and energy system. We will bring together thinkers and doers from across the Labour Party and trade union movement to discuss what our country should look like in 10, 20, 30 years. The Party’s manifesto has inspired millions. We will build on that to envision a reindustrialised and democratised economy that addresses the climate crisis and hands back control.
