Event description
Public panel discussions and Q&As with experts in the spatial and political aspects of skateboarding

About this event

This event is free but you will need a ticket to gain entry. The event is 14+.

As part of our Skateboarding in the City festival, we're stoked to invite you to two 90-minute panel discussions and Q&A sessions hosted by skaters, academics, researchers, makers and activists. Following the Tokyo Olympics and prior to the opening of the new 'skate friendly' public space in central Nottingham, this is an opportunity to explore and discuss critical issues, including: how urban spaces can be more inclusive of diverse groups; how skateboarding can contribute to Nottingham's low carbon ambitions; how young people can more directly benefit from urban regeneration; how skateboarding can continue to become more inclusive of gender, race and sexual orientation; and how all of our work, relationships and leisure can improve mental health and wellbeing during times of multiple crises.

The timings will be:

4pm-4.30pm - arrival, networking and drinks at the bar

4.30-6.00pm - Panel 1: Spaces - chaired by chartered engineer, designer, maker and skater Bedir Bekar (Price & Myers and UCL)

6.00-6.30 - break, refreshments and chat

6.30-8.00 - Panel 2: People, Identities and Inclusion - chaired by young Nottingham skaters, skate coaches and activists Hannah Shrewsbury and Connor Law

Panellists to be announced soon - with bios on www.skatenottingham.co.uk

The talks will be filmed for later release and we will check for consent to be filmed/recorded if you ask a question.

This event has been kindly made possible by the support of the National Lottery Community Fund, the UK Science Festivals Network and Habito Mortgages.

We are grateful to Metronome, Nottingham's Contemporary cross-media venue in the heart of the Creative Quarter.

Organiser Skate Nottingham

Organiser of Radical Places - Panel Discussions on Skateboarding in the City

Skate Nottingham are a social enterprise dedicated to putting skateboarding at the centre of Nottingham's active, social, cultural and economic development. We want to learn from cities that have used skateboarding's unique ability to engage with children and young people - particularly those who are less engaged with traditional team sports - and unlock the benefits of skateboarding being far more than 'just a sport'. We are also dedicated to increasing participation amongst women and girls, and in encouraging older skaters to return to the culture and community of skateboarding.
