Event description
The inaugural lecture of Professor Kehinde Andrews, reflecting on the movement to establish Black Studies in Britain

About this Event

A 'Saturday School' on the topic as part of our series will be on November 30th, 11am. All details at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/black-studies-saturday-school-tickets-75305700377?aff=ebapi

Professor Andrews will be introduced by Dr Dionne Taylor, Deputy Course Leader for Black Studies and Deputy Head of Department of Criminology and Sociology, and following the lecture there will be a panel discussion including current Black Studies students.

In 2017 Birmingham City University became the first university in Europe to launch a Black Studies degree programme. In 2018, Kehinde Andrews became professor of Black Studies joining the very small number of Black professors in the country. In his inaugural lecture Professor Andrews will reflect on establishing Black Studies in Britain and the possibilities the subject opens for changing the role of the university. The aim is not to get Black places in high places but use the privileges of the university to help in the struggles for justice off campus. Black Studies may be new to the university but there is a long tradition of intellectual thought and activism in Britain that are the real roots of what is being attempted at BCU. By connecting the university to the Black communities and providing students the opportunities to gain hands on skills working on the ground Black Studies offers the possibility to create meaningful change in society.

Copies of the new paperback edition of Professor Andrews Back to Black: Retelling Black Radicalism for the 21st Century will be on sale with proceeds going to the Harambee Organisation of Black Unity
