About this event

  • 2 hours 30 minutes

Visit the former site of RAF Barnham or No.94 Maintenance Unit Royal Air Force. At the height of the Cold War this was one of the most secret sites in the UK - home to Britain's arsenal of atomic weapons for the mighty V Bomber force including the massive Blue Danube gravity bomb. Walk the site, complete with barbed wire perimeter, concrete walls, guard towers and zones for attack dogs and armed guards. Enter the actual "hutches" where fissile cores were stored, climb up a watchtower for a guards-eye view and find out how the current owner's father purchased this former Ministry of Defence site to became the Dr Strangelove of Norfolk!

Duration: approx 2- 2.5 hours. Free parking on site. Meet at the car park of Gorse Industrial Estate, Elveden Road, Barnham, near Thetford. Post Code IP24 2PH or precise location via the very highly recommended What3Words geolocation app using the three words "kings.gambles.sues". Do not go to the nearby active military base that is still called RAF Barnham. Please wear sturdy shoes - no heels, flip flops etc. This tour is largely outdoors so wear clothing appropriate for the weather. Toilet facilities on site. As well as this 11am tour, there is also a 2pm tour listed separately on Eventbrite - click here for details. Access Statement: This event is moderately accessible. Wheelchair users could access most of the site, provided they have cross-country ability. Some of the route is on tarmac road but the majority is on grass, some areas of which can get muddy in wet weather. Access to the visitor room is via two steps. Access to the watchtower is via steep steps/ ladders and is therefore able-bodied only. Total distance approx 1 mile. There are no accessible toilets.
