RAF100 Schools Project: Free CPD York
Event Information
Description
As part of the RAF100 Schools Project, the Historical Association and the Institute of Physics are offering a day of free CPD to teachers at the Yorkshire Air Museum on Saturday 17th March 2018.
This CPD is funded by the RAF and intended to support and enhance the RAF100 Schools programme of history and STEM materials. All teachers and technicians, regardless of their specialist subject, are welcome.
The day will include practical sessions on ideas that teachers can take back to their schools and use with pupils, whether in STEM and History clubs or in lessons. The material in the project is aimed at 11-16 year olds, but could be adapted for use with younger pupils, or by sixth-formers.
There will also be a tour of the museum; perhaps it would be a good place for a school visit later in the year. Museum staff will be happy to answer questions.
Programme for the day
10:30 Registration and coffee – ample free parking on site
11:00 RAF History workshop
The History workshop will focus on one or two of the History activity topics on the website to build subject knowledge for the classroom. Using the resources and additional materials the teachers will have an opportunity to develop their understanding of the topics and how to deliver them in the classroom with a greater understanding of the scientific and technical history behind them. The CPD is provided by an experienced teacher and workshop facilitator.
12:30 Lunch- a buffet lunch will be included
13:00 STEM workshop
Jelly lenses: make a flexible lens and see how its optical properties depend on it shape. Take it back to school for immediate and extended use. Use threads to model rays and construct tactile ray diagrams, a concept that often challenges pupils.
This workshop will use practical activities that are outside, but linked to, school curricula. Play with the kit: how would this work back in school? The aim is to be confident both in running a practical session and in encouraging pupils to make links, at an appropriate level, with their formal studies.
