About this event

Sukhvinder Singh “Pinky” is a renowned Indian tabla virtuoso celebrated for his extraordinary technical mastery, dynamic expressiveness, and captivating stage presence, hailed as one of India’s most dynamic percussionists. Born in Sri Bhaini Sahib, Punjab, he embarked on his musical journey playing traditional instruments such as the dholak and jorhi, but it was under the tutelage of the esteemed Pt. Kishan Maharaj—after an auspicious debut at the 1978 Satguru Pratap Singh Sangeet Sammelan—where he deepened his tabla artistry through rigorous riyaz in Varanasi.

Over the years, Sukhvinder has become a highly sought-after accompanist, performing with legends like Pt. Ravi Shankar, Ustad Vilayat Khan, and Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, and earning a Grammy in 1994 for his work on “A Meeting by the River”. As a solo tabla artist, he commands acclaim for his versatility across both the Punjab and Benares gharana styles, and has had the honor of performing as a soloist with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra; in 2016, Ustad Zakir Hussain even proclaimed him to be the foremost exponent of the jorhi—underscoring the brilliance of his tabla musicianship.

In this tabla solo, he will be accompanied by Satwinder Pal Singh on the sarangi, an artist celebrated for his sensitive musicianship and deep command of this soulful instrument. Steeped in the rich traditions of Indian classical music, Satwinder has established himself as a sought-after accompanist, known for his ability to weave lyrical depth and emotional resonance into every performance. His artistry complements the rhythmic brilliance of the tabla, creating a perfect balance of sound and spirit that promises an unforgettable evening for lovers of Indian classical music.
