Event description
Walk, Deep Mapping, and fermentation workshop led by Simon Yuill

About this Event

You are invited to join artist Simon Yuill in a walk combining archaeology, Deep Mapping and fermentation following the evolution of the River Dee and Raik Road area of Aberdeen from the time of its earliest inhabitants, through the fishing and oil booms, to projects exploring the future of food production.

From the banks of the Dee, archaeologists Ali Cameron and Sheila Duthie will host a discussion on life in the Mesolithic era, the importance of the Dee in sustaining this and how the river has changed its shape and purpose over time.

Crossing over to Raik Road, Nuno Sacramento, Director of Peacock Visual Arts, will lead a Deep Mapping exercise around the fish houses and oil offices that have shaped Aberdeen's economy and identity in modern times, asking what personal histories and meanings this area holds for people now.

We will end the afternoon at CFINE on Poynernook Road with a hands-on introduction to food fermentation led by Arthur Serini and Madi Myers from The Crafty Pickle, a local food start-up exploring how one of the oldest known food storage and production skills is acquiring new significance.

• 13:00 - Meet at the front of boathouses on the Torry side of the River Dee to discuss its Mesolithic history and evolution.

• 14:00 – Walk commences, crossing the bridge into the Raik Road area to participate in Deep Mapping exercises.

• 15:00 – Fermentation workshop in the community kitchens at CFINE (Community Food Initiatives North East) followed by a discussion.

• 17:00 – End of walk and fermentation workshop
