About this event

Government • Other

This year (2025) marks the bicentenary of the first passenger-carrying, locomotive-hauled railway journey, from Stockton to Darlington. It was the birth of the modern railway.

While the rail industry and rail enthusiasts celebrate two hundred years of rail transport, Janine Booth has written a book about the workers who built, maintained and operated the railway over the last 200 years, the issues they face and the battles they have waged.

Janine will be speaking at this event about two centuries of railworkers, their lives and struggles, and the lessons for rail workers' struggles now and in the future.
