About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour 30 minutes

To mark the launch of Kevin Guyan’s new book Rainbow Trap (Bloomsbury Academic, 2025), join us for a panel discussion exploring queer lives, classifications and the dangers of inclusion.

From the laws that shape our rights to the algorithms that predict our behaviors, gender, sex and sexuality categories are everywhere – but who decides what gets counted and why?

The panel will explore how gender, sex sexuality categories are designed and (mis)used across policy, law and data. And what lies ahead? Should we try to fix categories to make them fairer or are these classification systems beyond repair?

The Gender + Sexuality Data Lab is a north star for researchers, practitioners, activists and creatives engaged in critical work on collecting, analysing and using gender, sex and sexuality data. It is for people who feel outside the data systems that shape our everyday lives – and want to change them.
