Professor Berinderjeet Kaur would like to invite you to join her on Thursday 16th November 2017 to reflect on Mastery of Mathematics and its impact on the teaching and learning of mathematics in UK classrooms for years 7-9.

The session, sponsored by Oxford University Press and organised by Chobham Academy offers a unique opportunity for head teachers, heads of department and subject leaders of secondary schools to attend a free professional development session to hear and learn from internationally renowned maths expert Professor Berinderjeet Kaur.

About Professor Berinderjeet Kaur

Berinderjeet Kaur is a Professor of Mathematics Education at the National Institute of Education in Singapore; the first person to hold this position in Singapore. She is the founding chairperson of the Singaporean Mathematics Teachers’ Conference series, and founding editor of the Association of Mathematics Educators Yearbook series. Professor Kaur was the Mathematics consultant to TIMSS 2011 and a member of the Mathematics Expert Group to PISA 2015.

For her contributions in Education she was awarded the Public Administration Medal by the President of Singapore in 2006. In 2015, she was again recognised for her outstanding contributions in Education to the Nation by the Sikh Community of Singapore. She is passionate about the development of mathematics teachers.

About Vanessa Pittard

Vanessa Pittard has worked for the DfE for the last 6 yeasrs, more recently leading policy reforms on mathematics and STEM education. She now works as an independent educational consultant offering extensive experience, expert advice and knowledge linked to curriculum, qualification change, pedagogy and mastery, as well as education policy developments.


Event Details

Professor Berinderjeet Kaur will discuss her recent research, the importance of deep conceptual understanding in mathematics and the impact of procedural fluency in the classroom.

Afterwards Vanessa Pittard will lead an informal Q &A with Professor Kaur considering implications and next steps for teachers of mathematics in UK secondary schools.
