Event description

Description

The fight for equality begins at home, and from a young age. And, there is never a better time than now to start.

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?

This course is for you:

  • If you are a parent, or an educator, who is passionate about raising strong, feminist children unencumbered by the narrow definitions of gender that society imposes upon us.

  • If you are keen to inspire children, both girls and boys, to break the gender stereotypes and boxes that they are put in from an early childhood.

  • If you are passionate about raising children who are not only comfortable in their own skin and their own identities, but also stand up and speak up for others.

  • If you are interested in learning more about how we can bring an intersectional view to feminism, and how we can talk to children about race.

This is not a course to tell you what to do. Because every child is different and every context is slightly different. But there are some universal strategies that can work for all of us as we create a fairer, happier and more equal world for our children.

I know from my own experience that we want to do the best for our children but it can be so overwhelming to make sense of all the numerous blog posts and information out there so I want to distill my research and my experience into a manageable and easily digestible course. This will introduce you to several of the feminist parenting approach and philosophies that I have found useful, but with a practical dimension so that you can apply them to your parenting everyday.

I will bring examples and case studies so that we can learn from others' experiences too. This is a multi-layered complex issue and I want to make it as accessible and inclusive as possible.

Nothing like this really exists.

This course is not just for parents. With my experience of running sexism and equality workshops in schools I know that teachers find this equally challenging to counter this in the classroom. So, this course is as relevant for you if you a teacher or primary age educator, and keen to address these gender stereotypes in your workplace.

This course will be suitable for any age group from birth to teenagers, as we will be looking at a range of case studies. You can also come back and refer to this course and any updated material at your own pace and time.

WHY ME?

I am a feminist, a parent to three girls, an educator, write and speaker, and I strongly and passionately believe in equality for all. I was born and raised in a very patriarchal society in India, and I have worked all my life so far to break the gender biases and expectations that are imposed upon us. First in my own career, as a woman in STEM, coming to the UK alone as a single parent to do a Masters and a PhD, as the first female lecturer in a top 5 Engineering department in the UK, and then in raising my girls, first my 21 year old as a single parent, and now my three year old twins, I have experienced the joys and challenges of being a feminist parent. My eldest is a social activist, and was named as one of the 20 'groundbreaking women of 2018' by The Independent. A proud moment for me as a parent!

I have written about my own experience of raising race-conscious children and feminist parenting for Huffington Post. I have also given keynote talks at various conferences and panels, and am regularly invited to give sexism and equality talks in schools. I also run a thriving parent community 'Raising Feminists' and if you are a member of the group, you will be able to get an exclusive discount to this course.

Feminism is not just for girls. Feminism benefits boys too, because our boys face so much pressure to be a certain way, to conform to a toxic view of masculinity which is not good for their mental health. When we impose stereotypes and create gender divides it also creates a pressure on men to conform to a rigid notion of masculinity where vulnerability and emotional expression is seen as a weakness. I recently gave a TEDx talk on patriarchy, misogyny and gender stereotypes and how feminism is good for men's mental health. It is available on my podcast 'Outside the Boxes'.

WHY THIS COURSE?

This is a 4 week online course, as a dedicated membership facebook group with life-time access to all course materials. This means that you can work through the course at your own pace if you are busy (as we all are!), you will have a sense of community, share ideas and experiences, and receive any updates I make to the course material in the future.

I will do regular weekly videos in the membership group and will be on hand everyday to respond to queries. We will also bring in other parenting experts in the group from time to time.

The course will consist of the following:

1. A curated list of resources and books for bringing diversity and inclusivity into our child's world

2. Access to a range of articles and PDFs on parenting and feminism

3. List of practical tasks, actions and strategies that willl help you at home and in educational context

4. Interviews with parents and experts who will bring their experience and unique way to how we tackle these challenges

5. Weekly Live Q & A with me in the group.

I wish for a world where every child can grow up choosing who they want to be, and freedom to create a life that they want without fear and without discrimination and prejudice. Will you join me?

HOW DO I JOIN?
