Description

Ramblers Roadshow - Lake District

Last year over 400 of you attended Ramblers Roadshows across GB. They are an opportunity to learn new skills or brush up your knowledge in workshops such as Rights of Way, navigation and leading walks. You’ll also find out more about our vision and plan and how you play a part in delivering it. The day is absolutely free for volunteers or those who are interested in volunteering with the Ramblers.

Whether you're just getting involved or a regular volunteer with the Ramblers you'll find a workshop for you. You can find out more details about the days and book your space on our event booking page.

On the day you'll have the chance to take part in a varied programme with a number of workshops available in the morning and afternoon or all day.

We'll be running the following workshops:

All Day Workshops:

Walk Leadership Induction - The course will cover the ethos behind being a Ramblers walk leader and the practicalities, legal requirements, ideas and some skills needed for planning and leading a walk. Some of the day will be based in the training room and some of it out walking. By the end of this training walk leaders will have a greater understanding of what makes a good walk and how to go about delivering this, linking this knowledge to Ramblers guidelines, best practice and will be able to lead a Ramblers walk with increased confidence.

Morning workshops:

First Aid - This new half-day training course will cover the basics of first aid, based around the scenarios Ramblers are most likely to face on a group walk. It aims to build confidence and skills, and give Ramblers volunteers the tools they need when faced with an emergency on a walk – whether cuts and grazes, broken bones, or something more serious. All Ramblers volunteers will benefit from attending, but particularly walk leaders, backmarkers, and anyone willing to volunteer as the nominated ‘first aider’ on a group walk.No previous first aid knowledge is required to attend this course.

Rights of Way - the basics - This workshop is aimed at anyone who is involved in our Rights of Way work or would like to know more. It is an introduction and overview of the law relating to Rights of Way and access. It covers some of the most common questions we get asked about public footpaths by members of the public and what you can do to help protect the network of footpaths we enjoy in England and Wales.

Navigation - This workshop is designed to give members an introduction to how to navigate using a map and compass. It covers the basics of using a map and compass. Among the techniques covered are; basic map reading, reading contours, grid references, setting a map with a compass and taking a bearing. No prior knowledge of map reading is required for this session – it is designed for beginners and those who want to brush up on their knowledge. Maps and compasses are provided.

Afternoon workshops:

Data and Digital Transformation - Explaining what has been delivered by the programme so far and what is yet to come. An opportunity to understand the new Ramblers app and the Insight Hub so your group can really benefit from these exciting new capabilities.Suitable for all volunteers.

Don't Lose Your Way -With 2026 approaching, the Don’t Lose Your Way campaign is picking up speed. In this session, we will recap the aims of the Don’t Lose Your Way campaign and look at the upcoming tools which will enable volunteers to get involved in uncovering lost rights of way. This session is suitable for anyone curious to learn more about the campaign, and for those who are keen to hear about the latest updates.

The day will finish with an informal panel discussion and an opportunity to put your questions about walking and the outdoors to our panel of experts.
