Event description

Description

All volunteers in Scotland are invited to join us at this year’s Ramblers roadshow in Glasgow on Saturday 7 September. From walk leaders and back markers to publicity officers, secretaries and chairs - all are welcome. Whether you're just starting out as a Ramblers volunteer or you regularly volunteer with us, we hope there will be plenty to interest you and we encourage you to come along.

Our programme offers you opportunities for you to brush up knowledge and learn new skills. We’re offering a mix of structured information sharing workshops on an array of topics together with informal drop in surgeries to ensure you have the one to one time with staff to ask questions, seek guidance or explore ideas.

Morning Workshops - please note you will only be able to attend one morning workshop.

1. Digital and Data Transformation
Explaining what has been delivered by the programme so far and what is yet to come. An opportunity to understand the new Ramblers app and the Insight Hub so your group can really benefit from these exciting new capabilities. Suitable for all volunteers.

2. Introduction to our new volunteer website (Assemble) and volunteering
Volunteers choose to donate their time and skills for lots of good reasons and there’s no single answer as to what makes a good volunteering experience. However, good resources and support are often top of people’s wish-list. Assemble, our new volunteer website, will make volunteering with us simpler, more joined up and easier for you to get support. This workshop will look at what volunteering is and isn’t, how to make it a good experience for everyone and what you can look forward to with Assemble. Suitable for all volunteers.

3. Write a press release for your group or area.
Together we will discuss the opportunities for using press releases to promote your group, including the wide range of potential topics – from Munro milestones and long-distance trails, to new members drives and interesting walks. We’ll look at what journalists want from a press release, how the system works and how to submit them to the media. And finally, we’ll all have a go at writing a real press release that you can send to local media following the workshop. Suitable for all volunteers who promote their group, including secretaries and publicity officers.

4. Creating a warm welcome for new members.
Sadly, about 50% of all new members leave us in their first year. This interactive workshop will cover how we can best welcome new members, explore the key contact points when they first join and during/after their first walk, share practical steps you can implement straight away and leave you with a practical how-to guide to take away. Anybody is welcome to join this workshop, although it may be particularly relevant for walk leaders, secretaries, membership secretaries, social secretaries and chairs.

5. Problem solving – managing complaints and disputes
While the vast majority of members thoroughly enjoy their time with us, there are occasions when complaints or disputes arise. This workshop will outline the general principals of problem solving and what to do when things go wrong. We’ll share the Ramblers’ new problem-solving procedure and support you to help resolve problems locally before they escalate. This workshop will benefit all area and group committee members; in particular chairs, secretaries and walk leaders.

Afternoon workshops - please note you will only be able to attend one afternoon workshop.

7. Fundraising - generating income for your group and Ramblers
As a charity much of our work protecting our country’s landscapes and ensuring that everyone can access the outdoors relies on the generosity of our supporters. This workshop will leave you equipped with the confidence and skills to raise vital funds for your groups, local communities and for the Ramblers. We will look at how event planning, fundraising in your community, and fundraising online can be done easily and efficiently. We'll also cover where to find fundraising opportunities and how to apply for grants. Suitable to all volunteers who are interested in generating income in a simple and effective way.

8. Introduction to Ramblers Group Walks and Events Manager

Let us help you promote your group activities more effectively to members and a wider audience. To benefit from the new Ramblers app, your group will need to list your group walks on the Ramblers website in our Group Walks and Events Manager (GWEM). Once listed, they will then pull through to your group webpage and also the Ramblers app. This is an ideal introductory workshop for all volunteers not currently using GWEM to help you get started. You can download the Ramblers app from Google play or the apple app store.

9. Introduction to access rights
How sure are you about your access rights and responsibilities? How can you find out, and what do you do if challenged when out for a walk? This will be a light-hearted session which aims to equip Ramblers volunteers with the knowledge and awareness they need to get out and about with greater confidence. Aimed at volunteers who are not totally confident about their access rights and responsibilities.

10. Attracting new members
We are learning more about what the broader walking public enjoy and will use this workshop to share our insights. A series of recent walks led by our President, Ben Dolphin, will be used as a case study to explore what walk leaders can do to attract new walkers to their groups. This interactive session will give walk leaders the chance to share their own ideas and learn from each other. A workshop for walk leaders.

All volunteers are welcome, the day is free, lunch and refreshments will be provided and travel will be reimbursed so do come and join us. We look forward to meeting you there.
