Ramblers Scotland Winter Hill Skills Day
Overview
Build skills, confidence and adventure!
Start the New Year by building your confidence and core skills for walking in the winter hills. This introductory walk will cover the essentials required for safe travel in winter conditions and inspire you to tackle the winter hills safely at your own pace.
You’ll already have clothing and equipment suitable for three-season walking, but winter conditions demand a significant change in how you dress and what you carry. The obvious additions are an ice axe and crampons, which enable you to handle a variety of snow conditions safely. However, you’ll also need to consider appropriate winter boots and several other essential items.
Winter weather can vary hugely, from wet and windy to sub-zero with strong winds, and occasionally those wonderfully clear, calm, blue-sky days with crisp, firm snow. Your clothing and equipment must be capable of coping with the full range of conditions.
Who is the course for?
Attendees must hold a Ramblers membership and have previously taken part in group walks to meet Health and Safety requirements.
Entry requirements
The course is for those volunteers who have already completed the Walk Leader Foundations, Preventing and Managing Incidents and have read & signed the Walk Leader Handbook declaration.
