About this event

Join Kath, a trained walk leader with the Ramblers on a A Tyne Derwent Way wellbeing walk from the Metrocentre to the Derwent and back.

Did you know that the TDW trail runs right in front of Gateshead Metrocentre? This short, 2 mile walk takes us to the confluence of the rivers Derwent and Tyne, with some fun facts and local history thrown in for good measure. Shopping or working in the Metrocentre? Why not take an hour out to get some fresh air. Easy access by bus, rail and car.

Meet outside the Angel statue, in the Blue Mall, next to Pizza Hut (picture below) - the walk will end here, too. What three words is ///mild.rate.outfit

Suitable for all, although we’d recommend you’re comfortable walking up to 2 miles/ being on your feet for up to an hour - or travelling the equivalent distance and time in your wheelchair.

Get away without going away, down the Tyne Derwent Way.

Gateshead's green getaway connects our urban communities to our beautiful countryside, and our past to our present and our future.

The trail showcases Gateshead's nature, heritage and culture. It's a nine-mile route for walking, cycling, running and exploring, linking the many attractions along the rivers Tyne and Derwent: St Mary's Heritage Centre, Gateshead Riverside Park, Dunston Staiths, the Metro Centre, the Land of Oak and Iron Heritage Centre, Nine Arches Viaduct, Thornley Woodland Centre and Gibside.

It's far more than just a trail, though. The project, funded by the UK Government, offers a programme of events and activities and is restoring, refurbishing and developing places for people to enjoy.

We're supporting local people and communities to boost health and wellbeing, improving habitats where a wealth of wildlife can thrive, and improving access along the route.

Local partners including the Tyne & Wear Building Preservation Trust , Northumbria University, Newcastle University , Gateshead Council and the National Trust are working together with local communities to bring our heritage to life and create a green getaway we can all be proud of - and we can all be part of.

The trail is open and everybody's welcome to enjoy it, experience it and get involved in shaping it. Some parts of the route are more developed than others - it's a work in progress and we're always looking for ideas and volunteers, so get in touch if you'd like to help.
