About Us
Thanks to the Forestry Commission’s Tree Production Capital Grant and the hospitality and collaboration of the University of Essex and The Markshall Estate, Essex County Council has proudly launched two community tree nurseries—growing tomorrow’s forests with today’s local hands.

Why Are They Needed?
Natural regeneration is under threat due to:
• Deer browsing and trampling of young saplings
• Invasive species crowding out native plants
• Fragmented landscapes and surrounding land use that block seed dispersal
These challenges prevent trees from spreading naturally beyond existing woodland boundaries.

What We Do:
• Grow local trees from seeds collected in Essex woodlands—focusing on rare and declining native species
• Boost resilience by planting species that can handle droughts and floods
• Fight climate change with diverse, future-proof woodlands.
Our nurseries can also help volunteers connect with nature to improve mental and physical wellbeing, meet others who care about the environment and gain hands-on experience and training.

Get Involved!
Whether you’re a nature lover, a student, or just curious—everyone is welcome. No experience needed. Tools and guidance provided.
