Event description

Description

Led by a Northumberland National Park Ranger you will begin the walk by following ‘Salter’s Road’, named after 18th century traders who smuggled salt by packhorse from salt pans on the North Northumberland coast to Scotland.

You will stop at the Shepherd’s Cairn – a memorial to two shepherds who lost their lives in the winter of 1962. This tragedy resulted in the National Park Voluntary Wardens setting up the Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Team – a volunteer organisation that turns out in all weather to help save lives.

This is a moderate level of walk – of medium length walk of 5-6 miles on hilly ground with rising and falling levels. A reasonable level of fitness is required.

Please dress for changeable weather, wear walking boots or shoes and bring drinks, snacks/lunch (there will be a picnic stop for lunch). Sorry, dogs are not allowed on this walk.

Duration: 4 hours

Distance: approx 5-6 miles

Starting point (please meet here approx 10 minutes before the start time): Alnham

Directions: From Rothbury take the B6341 west to Thropton. At the ‘Cross Keys’ take the road on the right for Netherton, at the school junction turn right for Alnham. Park on the grass verge in front of the church.

OS Grid Ref: NT 990 109

Postcode: NE66 4TJ (general area)

For those wishing to use GPS/Sat-Nav to find walk start points please note that, particularly in open country, postcodes cover a large area, so, whilst the postcode will get you to the right general area, you will still need to follow the detailed directions to locate the actual Walk Start Point.
