Raphael’s Skills

With Dr Arnold Nesselrath, Director of Conservation and Research, Vatican Museums

Raphael was described as a universal genius. This talk will explore Raphael’s unique qualities seen in his different artistic expressions – drawings, paintings, designs for tapestries, sculpture and architecture – and in his archaeological activities.

The talk is held on the occasion of the exhibition Raphael. The Drawings, on display from 1st June to 3rd September at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.

Arnold Nesselrath read History of Art, Archaeology and Classical Philology in Mainz, Bonn and at the Courtauld Institute in London. Since 1981 he supervises the project “Census of Antique Works of Art and Architecture Known in the Renaissance”, hosted first at the Warburg Institute, then at the Bibliotheca Hertziana in Rome, lastly at the Humboldt-Universität in Berlin. He has been working at the Vatican Museums since 1982, for which he is now Director of Conservation and Research. Since 1996 he is also Professor for History of Art at the Humboldt-Universität in Berlin, focusing his research on the heritage of antiquity.
