Get Backing

Nick Jones : After graduating from the University of Glasgow in 1999, Nick relocated to London in 2000 and has been working at the cutting edge of digital media ever since. As part of the launch team at Goto.com, Nick helped to pioneer paid search marketing in the UK and Europe in the days before Google.

Subsequently Nick held senior client service and strategic positions at Overture Services and at Yahoo! post Overture’s acquisition in 2004. In 2006 Nick co-founded digital marketing agency I Spy Marketing. Over the subsequent 5 years Nick led I Spy’s growth to 60+ employees and established I Spy as one of the UK’s leading independent digital marketing agencies. I Spy was sold to Aegis Media in 2012. Nick also co-founded spin out business “Upcast Social”, a leading Facebook Ad management platform, subsequently sold to MediaMath.

Since 2012 Nick has been a full time Angel Investor focusing mainly on the Marketing & Ad Tech space. He fronts an Angel Syndicate, Galvanise Capital which invests from SEIS stage, to £1m seed. Nick is involved with several Scottish start ups, including Adimo (based in Glasgow), Pixey and Make it Social, and until recently Chaired Aquila Insight, sold to Merkle Denstu in June 2017.

Jim Law is a former Scottish badminton champion. After moving cities and experiencing the pain of losing all his regular games and playing partners Jim realised there was a gap in the market for a product which could help solve all the issues around to organising, finding and playing sport.

Jim joined entrepreneurial spark in 2014 hoping to fill some key gaps in his knowledge base.  Find a Player launched in January 2016 and has established itself as the UKs largest sports participation.  Find a Player is now looking to scale up UK operations before aiming for global expansion

Janice Cuningham has experience working with SME’s, in all sectors and at all stages of business, for more than 30 years in the financial services, and retail sectors both in Scotland and abroad.

She joined the award winning Entrepreneurship Team at the Royal Bank of Scotland in March 2016 following almost 10 years with the Bank as a successful  business relationship manager in Stirling supporting over 150 SME’s obtaining a full understanding of their businesses and challenges, and provided guidance and support to help them maximise their potential and focus by working on, rather than in their business.

As Entrepreneur Development Manager she provides the link between Entrepreneurial Spark and the Bank, using her experience and expertise in B2B and B2C, as well as the banks reach and connectivity to Power the businesses on the programme.

Janice was invited by Stirling council in 2014 to be a city commissioner to work on a project to improve their strategic focus for the better of the local businesses, residents and employees. This provided an exciting opportunity to help make a difference in the local economy.

As an accredited  Royal Bank of Scotland Women in Business Ambassador she co-founded Women In Business Forth Valley in 2013 to fill a gap in the area for a female led networking group with a focus on supporting, upskilling and sharing best practise in a safe, relaxed environment. This group continues to be a passion and focus for her.

Get Big

Stefania Ponzo has over 9 years’ experience in the financial sector working with private clients and businesses.

Stefania joined Coutts Investment Office in 2011 and was responsible for providing long term asset allocation solutions to Coutts clients globally, with focus on UHNW segment. Stefania moved to Strategic Solutions team in 2014 to focus on private company investment opportunities.

She started her career working with start-up businesses as direct investor and consultant in the clean energy and IT sector. She holds a Master’s degree in Financial Mathematics from Cass Business School.

Ricky Nicol has a background in engineering and sales Co Founded Commsworld in 1994 as a Telephone Systems Reseller and Installation company. Evolved the business, organically and via acquisition, over the last 5 years to create the largest Indigenous Next Generation Network Operator & Unified Communications Company in Scotland.

Commsworld supports thousands of the countries leading organisations, across both the Public and Private Sectors with their business critical Internet, Data & Voice Communications.

Shortlisted for Scottish Business Awards Chivas Brothers Entrepreneur of the year for 2015.

Scottish nomination as UK CEO for pwc Private Business Awards 2016.

Commsworld has invested heavily in a state of the art Next Generation Network (Fluency) that reaches the length and breadth of the UK and support organisations with their Internet and Data Communications world wide.

Paul Donkin has worked in IT and Technology funding for over 15 years, in the UK and Internationally before moving to LTS in 2016.

Born in Durham, but with client and partner relationships across Europe, Korea and the USA, his specialist knowledge and experience can benefit a wide range of business. He is responsible for business opportunities and existing clients in Glasgow and the West of Scotland.

His most recent tech claim to fame is in delivering a Software Licence Solution deal to a bank client who have not funded or borrowed in the 10 years since they were established, to allow that client to develop the business and potentially double turnover and drive improvements in EBITDA.

Get Bought

Mike Robertson has been with Dickson Minto for over 10 years and has worked on a wide range of transactions from early stage investments to large private equity investments and exits.  His current focus is on capital markets work and public M&A transactions as well as acting for a number of large private companies in relation to their M&A transactions and on-going day to day advice.  The companies he is involved with cross a broad range of sectors including social media, tech, life sciences and telecommunications and in 2017, a transaction which Mike led won the Investment of Year at the Scottish Life Sciences Awards.  

 

Seonaidh MacDonald was until late 2016, the CEO of mLED Ltd, a world leader in micro-displays for Augmented & Virtual Reality products. In 2016 he led mLED to a hugely successful trade sale to a U.S household name, delivering a significant exit multiple. He is Vice Chairman of The Lennox Partnership, a Social Enterprise organisation.

Prior to mLED Ltd, Seonaidh was Chairman of Hebridean Power Ltd, a renewable energy company, he was Deputy Managing Director and Business Services Director on the Board of Babcock Marine Clyde Ltd (part of Babcock International Group). At Babcock, he grew his reputation by negotiating the strategically important £2.5Billion, 15 year, UK Naval Base contract extension.

Between 1997-2005, Seonaidh held a variety of senior leadership roles at IBM leading truly worldwide teams across diverse functions such as WW Engineering, WW Supply Chain, Global Operations, and Procurement. Similarly he has held board positions, across a variety of sectors such as Engineering, Nuclear, Defence, and Electronic Manufacturing.

With over 25 years of international executive management experience, Seonaidh is a street smart, goal-driven senior executive and entrepreneur, with an outstanding record of maximising growth within the most competitive of international environments.

 

Richard Lockhart is a Private Banker at Adam and Company with more than 25 years’ experience of looking after the financial affairs of busy, successful, people and their families. The majority of his clients he has known for more than a decade and those relationships as a consequence have deep roots. Richard facilitates conversations for his clients with his specialist colleagues in Adam and Company’s Financial Planning and Investment teams as well as making sure the dots are joined with those clients’ existing professional advisors. A self-confessed technophobe, Richard enjoys nothing more than making selections from his extensive vinyl record collection to be played at excessive volume  - usually to the annoyance of his wife and three children.
