Event description

Description

A short introductory course for doctors, allied health professionals and nurses interested in learning more about the potential of the arts to impact on health. The evening will explore historical perspectives on what health and wellbeing has meant to different ages and cultures, examine key evidence for the impact of arts and culture participation, and for specific arts in health interventions, and look at specific case studies of arts in health in practice.

The training is conducted in partnership with University College London Hospitals Arts and Heritage and has been approved by the Federation of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom for 3 category 1 (external) CPD credits.

The training will achieve the following learning objectives

Learning objective 1

To review historical perspectives on what health and wellbeing has meant to different ages and populations, from the Ancient Greeks to the United Nations. To challenge a narrow biomedical perspective of the absence of suffering by facilitating participants to reflect on what constitutes wellbeing for them as individuals and to consider the diverse cultural viewpoints which influence subjective wellbeing.

Learning objective 2

To place arts in health in context; critiquing key evidence for the impact of arts and culture participation, and for specific arts in health interventions. To reflect on the challenges of producing 'evidence' and on what meaningful impact looks like in this field. To review policy documents from the UK government, Department of Health, Public Health England and the Kings Fund, and to examine how these support commissioning for arts in health and evaluating the impact of arts interventions.

Learning objective 3

To explore case studies to show how arts in health projects are imagined. planned, implemented and evaluated. To provide an insight into how anyone can get started in this field, listing key steps to success and providing resources for further study and opportunities to engage with practice.

The training will take place at the UCH Macmillan Cancer Centre - nearest tube Warren Street/Euston Square

An Information/Resource pack will be made available to all participants.

Refreshments will be served.
