Re-creating the Bayeux Tapestry - Ail-greu Tapestri Bayeux

"I’m Mia Hansson, a self-taught textile artist, author and Bayeux-style illustrator. Born in Sweden, but residing in England since 2003. A teacher by training and in heart, even though I no longer work in an educational setting.

In July 2016, I embarked on an epic needle-journey, with the aim of recreating the famous Bayeux Tapestry, full-scale and the way it may have looked when it was brand new, before any damage or repairs were done. By January 2026, I hope to have completed at least 55 metres. I aim to complete the project in the autumn of 2027, coinciding with the millennium anniversary of William the Conqueror’s birth.

The presentation mainly focuses on the handicraft aspect of the project, with a nod to the original masterpiece. The images you will see are of my embroidery. The PowerPoint slideshow will show how I work and this includes image transfer and the three main stitches, as well as a few tips and tricks. I will also reveal some of what have discovered during my close study of the original embroidery.

You will see details that you may never have noticed before and what I consider proof that several people worked on the original embroidery, even that they may have argued at times. I will compare my work with that of the 11th century seamstresses’ and let you know why I work alone, so I don’t have to argue with anyone."
