Description

Re-imagining Church Tourism – bringing cultural visitors into the wider family of the church

This will be a free full-day conference including lunch and a visit to Ely cathedral, thanks to generous sponsorship from Ecclesiastical Insurance and the Cambridgeshire Historic Churches Trust. During the day, among others, we will benefit from the advice and experience of the following organisations:

  • Ecclesiastical Insurance, Kevin Thomas - being open and being safe
  • The Churches Visitor & Tourism Association, Canon John Brown - the ministry of church buildings within the mission of the church
  • The National Churches Trust, Sarah Crossland - weaving in the worldwide web
  • Infopoints, Neil Rathbone - bringing church guidebooks into the 21st century
  • The Cambridgeshire Historic Churches Trust, The Bishop of Huntingdon and David Stazicker, secretary to the Trust - Ride & Stride and the work of a county trust in promoting churches tourism
  • Diocese of Ely, Geoffrey Hunter - turning tourists into cash, a marketing approach
  • Ely Cathedral, Jocelyn Palmer - the tourism experience at Ely Cathedral

A big part of the Diocese of Ely's 2025 strategy is about how, as churches, we can grow closer to our communities through our church buildings. In re-imagining our buildings we need to have confidence in letting people in – all people.

One category of visitor to our churches is the cultural visitor – tourists, “church crawlers”, concert goers, exhibition viewers. These people may be quite local, or from far away. In these days of electronic communication that doesn’t mean they cannot become part of our church family in time; if we let them.

The first step in that is making sure they can get in, and that we give them an encouraging, safe, fulfilling welcome. All churches will have their unique way of doing that.

England’s cathedrals already attract millions of visitors every year and as part of the conference, delegates will be privileged to visit Ely Cathedral to see the work they have been doing to engage with cultural visitors.

Around the country many parish churches are also finding new ways of meeting new people through their buildings, and we are fortunate to gather some of the most experienced and eminent volunteers and professionals in the business to Ely on 20 March.

NB the Methodist church is accessible and kindly offering us lunch. If you wish to attend and have any special requests, dietary or otherwise, please contact geoffrey.hunter@elydiocese.org
