Description

Re-writing Connie Converse, Chapter and Verse: Queer Folk, Queer Quietude, and the 1950s Lesbian Bar Scene of Greenwich Village, New York

A Public Talk & Musical Performance by Izzy Isgate (York St John University), accompanied by Paul Sparks.

An exploratory paper recuperating the undiscovered queer folk of songwriter, polymath, and peace academic-activist Connie Converse, who disappeared in her VW camper van in 1974 never to be heard from again. Part queer musicology, part performance, this event will offer a glimpse into Connie Converse’s acoustic music mapped out onto the lesbian bar scene of late 1950s and early '60s Greenwich Village, New York. With acoustic music by Izzy Isgate accompanied by Paul Sparks.

Izzy Isgate is a musician and independent scholar working in the fields of queer, critical, psychoanalytic, and feminist theory and art. Her current research on Connie Converse's "queer quietude" brings a queer scholarly bent to the archive of a prolific artist and activist, whose contributions to music and politics have received sparse critical attention in either music scholarship or queer history.
