Event description
Create and distribute care packages for our homeless communities with the Hot Chocolate Society

About this Event

As part of King's Global Day of Service, the Hot Chocolate Society is running a care package collection and distribution volunteering event for students, staff and alumni.

The Hot Chocolate Society was founded by King’s students to raise awareness for, and extend a helping hand to, the homeless community of London. The society’s name originates from daily outreach sessions in the Strand and Guy’s areas through which King’s students offer hot chocolate to rough sleepers to initiate conversations, build friendships and understand homelessness from the people who experience it. The society hopes that, by offering hot drinks to homeless people and engaging with them, they can share kindness with this particularly isolated and vulnerable population.

In addition to outreach activities, the Hot Chocolate Society has also organised various other initiatives throughout the year, including fundraising and speakers’ events, with talks by consultant psychiatrists, patients, social scientists and charitable organisations.

The volunteer students know that they cannot solve the practical daily challenges faced by homeless people, but they can offer a listening ear and compassion. In turn, the students involved in our outreach sessions have gained a better understanding of homelessness as a complex social issue. They have also learnt how to speak to homeless people with a non-judgmental and empathetic attitude.

Take part in this event to learn how to engage with individuals experiencing homelessness in a meaningful way and provide them with much needed items. The day will involve taking part in an outreach training session in the morning with Hot Chocolate Society team leaders, creating care packages throughout the afternoon and distributing these packages during outreach sessions in the evening.
